*NEW "made-in-UK" (miUK) Cosmetic Pads
Due to the exchange rate (import duty, courier charge and so forth) the Cosmetic Squares have become very expensive to import. Siew-Peng is experimenting with a local version. We hope to add a wash bag soon ... when we are able to source the fabric.
The miUK ones are different from the Hankettes ones in that:
- They are made from organic cotton flannel from a Soil Association certified supplier
- The fabric is slightly more "fuzzy", but much of this "fuzz" would shed after a few washes
- We are using ordinary sewing thread until we are able to get organic cotton thread that would fit in our new machine
- They are made in the UK, which we hope would boost local employment
- They have travelled fewer miles
- Pack of 10 miUK pads is — for now — only £6.00.
- P&P is only £0.60
Two Washing tips: Customers tell me that they wash these pads in the net bags provided by washing detergent manufacturers. Also, it maight be worth threading a short length of wool through a corner of these pads so that you could peg them up to dry.
Siew-Peng's number crunching: Make up for lost time/money
I do not personally use make-up, so please read the following with a large pinch of salt when it comes to the estimates.
Organic cotton wool pads and balls (the disposable kind) are about £1.99 for a pack of 100. Assuming that one needs three (or 4) a day, one goes through one pack of 100 disposables in 33 (or 25) days. In 365 days, one goes through 1,095 (or 1,460) pads. This would be equivalent to 10.95 (or 14.6) packs of 100 disposables.
At £1.99 each, 10.95 (or 14.6) packs are £21.79 (or £29.05) a year. That's £43.58 (or £58.10) in two years. Or £65.37 (or £87.15) in three.
The reusable Cosmetic Squares on this site are £15.49* (two packs of ten, including P&P, at previous price). I think we can safely call this a great saving.

This is now my second order of the 10-pack reusable cosmetics pads, I think they're great! I used to get through about 2-3 disposable cotton pads a day & didn't really think how much this was contributing to the ever growing amount of rubbish in the UK until I found these reusable ones! The reusable pads are just as soft as disposable ones, easy to wash and will be saving me money in the long run as reusing instead of having to buy new all the time! Definitely recommended! Cheers!
