Organic Cotton          Gift Wrapper Bags   Home > Gift Wrapping >> Organic Cotton Gift Bags >>> Organic Cotton Fabric About Our Fabric Our fairly-traded organic cotton fabric is sourced from Bishopston Trading, a Fair Trade workers co-operative set up to create employment in the village of K.V. Kuppam. The fabric starts as non-GM seed planted in the Kutch area of Gujerat, North India and grown organically under fair trading condition by Agrocel and certified by SKAL. The spun cotton is then transported to South India where it is dyed (using non-AZO dyes) and handwoven by workers in K.V. Kuppam. Traditionally the fabric comes only in plain colours or stripe and check patterns, like the ones here. This is because the fabric is handloomed and the patterns only go in straight lines. This year the first "ikat" patterns were pioneered. This involves tie-dying the thread before it is handloomed, giving the finished fabric a lovely shading in jagged 'bands'. Originally Siew-Peng made up these bags on her old trusty sewing machine. She experimented till she found a pattern that works and now the bags are made by members of the co-operative at KV Kuppam. Are these fabric bags expensive? We often see paper gift bags being sold for as much as £2.50 at department stores. Single-use gift wrapping paper can range from £0.40 to £1.00 or even more. Our bags, however, can be used many times over. Many customers report that the bags have been so well-received that recipients tend to hold on to them to keep trinkets, toys, lingerie, etc, rather than pass them on. OK, this defeats the original purpose of using reusable gift wrapper bags. At least it reduces the mindless disposal of single-use paper or plasticized/metallized paper bags which (though it can be re-used) cannot be recycled.
