We were thrilled, very thrilled indeed, to get our hands on organic cotton lawn through KV Kuppam and Bishopston Trading.
Here's our chance to make hankies which are elegant, colourful, ethical and organic. This hand-dyed and handloomed fabric is so delicate that it was clear the only way to "treat it right" was to sew it by hand.
The fabric has first to be washed (preshrunk), dried on the line, ironed and cut in small batches.
It then takes nearly two hours to hand-sew each of these handkerchiefs. (Logically, at minimum wage, each handkerchief should cost at least £10!)
Machine embroidery designs (if any) are added at this stage. The handkerchief has then to be washed again, dried and ironed and kept in a bag (in the most eco-friendly material we can find), ready for use.
